Little Steps, Big Aspirations For All

AUTUMN 1

Week 1

Our topic this half term is "How Many Colours in a Rainbow?"

This first week has been mostly spent getting to know each other and find out where things are in the classroom.

We have started out topic "How Many Colours in a Rainbow" and have named and sorted different colours.

Week 2

We have enjoyed listening to "Elmer" and "Elmer and Wilbur" and have done lots of art and craft activities to start our displays. The classroom is looking very colourful!

While working on our displays we have practised cutting and tearing and have been doing some colour mixing.

We have enjoyed making colourful cookies and did really well finding and naming all of the ingredients and the equipment.

Week 3

This week we have had lots of fun making a display for Elmer and Wilbur and we have sorted and named colours.

We used a milk bottle to make colourful elephants and these are hanging up in our classroom.

We enjoyed a visit to Hexham park and especially enjoyed the zip wire.

Here are some photographs of us at the park...

Week 4

We have had another busy week looking at the colours all around us.

Our story this week was "The Rainbow Fish" and we talked about feelings and what makes us happy and sad. We looked at ourselves in mirrors and made happy, sad and angry faces and then looked through magazines and sorted happy sad and angry faces. we then practised cutting skills to make our very own Rainbow Fish, making sure we added some shiny scales.

Outside in the garden, we looked for signs of autumn and talked about the colours of the leaves in autumn, and named some of the things we had found. We then went on to use autumnal colours to start our autumn leaves display, and used a range of materials and equipment for the background.

In cookery, we found our own equipment and ordered the sequence to make sandwiches and had some delicious chocolate spread sandwiches.

Week 5

On Monday, the man from Zoolab came with some creatures which we don't see very often. The animals were very friendly and let us stroke them but we had to just look at the tarantula. We were able to touch the snake, the rat and the hissing cockroach and we had to be very gentle.

In Science we made our own strange creatures by changing the colour of plain play doh using food colouring and adding feathers, beads and googly eyes. They are very colourful and not like any creatures we have ever seen.

Week 6

This week, we read the story "Planting A Rainbow" and looked at the different coloured flowers in the story. We have sequenced the story and put the rainbow colours in order.

We have done lots of singing and learnt new rainbow songs, and we made our own lovely rainbows using pipe cleaners and beads.

In Maths, we have worked hard on counting and ordering numbers.

We are continuing to enjoy Hexham Park during our time on the school bus.  The pupils are developing their independence and exploring skills.  You can see some are even enjoying the wonderful view from the top of the climbing frame.

Week 7

There has been a BIG birthday this week in class 8, so we have explored this topic. Pupils talked about birthdays and parties and what we would need.   Next we compiled a shopping list and off we went!!! Chocolate biscuits and juice were top of the list.  Some pupils took a little time out to try on some Halloween costumes.

The big day arrived on Friday and we had a party.  Cake, juice, a disco and even musical chairs were great fun.

Hope everyone has a great holiday, we are really looking forward to the all the exciting things happening next term.
