Little Steps, Big Aspirations For All

 Summer 1

Our topic this half term  is 'Whoosh, Pop, Fizz, Bang'.

Week 1 - Colours of the Rainbow

This week we have introduced the children to our new topic 'Whoosh, Pop, Fizz, Bang!'. This topic is all about exploring science and carrying out fun explosive experiment that will create a whoosh, a pop a fizz or a bang!

This week the children carried out a fantastic 'Skittles Rainbow' experiment which worked fantastically and the children loved. The children had to sort the skittles then complete a repeating rainbow pattern together     RED, ORANGE, YELLOW, GREEN, BLUE, INDIGO and VIOLET.

We were glad that the experiment went well as two others that we tried didn't really go to plan! Have a look at the photos of the experiment below.

Also this week the children have enjoyed starting our new cookery topic 'Pitta bread Pizzas'. The children have progressed so much over the course of the year following the instructions independently as well as requesting the ingredients and tools they need. Children had choice of toppings that they could put on their pizzas including ham, pepperoni, mushrooms, sweetcorn, tomatoes and peppers - no one was brave enough to put pineapple on their pizza though.

Week 2 - Bubble Trouble

This week 'Bubbles' have featured in both our Science and Art lessons.

In our Science lesson we saw what happened when Mentos sweets caused all the bubbles in a bottle of cola to escape and cause a huge 'WHOOSH' up into the air! The children tried to think about what would happen and were really engaged throughout the whole session. We tried the experiment 3 times, trying to get more Mentos in the bottle each time however Gavin found this tricky as he ended up being covered in cola before he could put them all in!

In our Art lesson the children tried to create their own bubbles to use to paint a bubble picture. We mixed paint, water and washing up liquid together then blew into the mixture with a straw to create the bubbles. We had to be careful not to forget and start to drink through the straw! Yuck! Once we created the bubbles we lay a sheet over paper over the top which made the bubbles go 'POP' and created our wonderful pictures! Have a look at all the fun we had in the pictures below!

Week 3 - Balloon Bonanza!

This week 'Balloons' have featured in our Science, Art and even our Numeracy lessons! In the classroom we have had fun with balloons, creating static electricity and moving peoples hair, as well as blowing up the balloons and leaving g, watching them go 'WHOOSH' across the classroom. Gavin also got a pin to 'POP' a couple of balloons which went 'BANG' and gave some of us a fright!

In Numeracy the children enjoyed playing a game on the interactive whiteboard where they had to pop balloons with different numbers on them, working on their number recognition skills.

Our Art lesson was a little experimental to say the least, and wasn't as successful as we wanted it to be, however it still was lots of fun. We made some paint balloons by filling water balloons with a mixture of water, washing up liquid and paint. The idea was that we would splat them onto a roll of backing paper to create a paint explosion. However, we had a bit of a disaster inside the classroom to start with as one exploded covering the entire classroom with splashes of orange paint. Then outside the wind tried to blow our paper and resources away, finally when we tried to burst the balloons we found it to be almost impossible. It took Tina, Gavin and Amy quite a lot of effort to get them to burst! Which the children found hilarious!

Our Science lesson was a bit more of a success. We carried out an experiment together using vinegar, baking powder, a plastic bottle and a balloon. We filled the bottle half way with white vinegar and used a funnel to put a spoonful of baking powder into a balloon. We then attached the balloon to the top of the bottle and tipped the baking soda into the vinegar! The children thought the balloon might have exploded but instead the mixture began to bubble and create air which inflated the balloon. After attempt number one we decided to try again and again and again, putting two then three and finally five spoonfuls of baking soda into the balloon! The children loved watching the experiment, smelling the vinegar and listening to the mixture 'FIZZ'.

Week 4 - Fizzy fizzy lets get busy!

This week we have focused on creating a bit of fizz in the classroom. The children have enjoyed creating fizzy artwork as well as making fizzy bath bombs. For our fizzy artwork we covered a baking tray in Bicarbonate of Soda. After that we mixed vinegar with different food colouring and used syringes to squirt some of the mixture onto the tray. The coloured vinegar made the bicarbonate of soda FIZZ and BUBBLE. By the time we had finished we had colourful fizzy rainbow artwork. Later in the week we worked together as a group to make bath bombs which we will use in our sensory/water area next week. We decided to make red and blue bath bombs and used 'Sweet Orange' essential oil to give them a nice smell. We cant wait to watch them FIZZ when we put them in the water next week!

Also on Thursday this week it was 'National Numeracy Day' so we decided to dedicate the whole morning to Numeracy! During the first session we played a fun shape game, where Gavin called out a clue which was either a colour, shape name or something about a shape. We had to move from the back of the classroom to the front and stand on one of the shapes on the floor that matched the clue. After playtime we went out into the yard and played some number relay races using giant Numicon pieces. Finally we headed to the discovery park for a shape and number treasure hunt. Have a look at the fun we had below:

Week 5 - Whoosh...and the half term is over!

Wow! What a very busy last week of the half term we've had in Class 9! We looked back at our favourite experiments and activities from the past four weeks and decided to recreate some of our favourite moments including the 'Cola and Mentos' experiment and 'Blowing Bubbles' art activity.

On Thursday this week it was 'Outdoor Classroom Day'. The children were tasked with spending as much time completing activities outside of the classroom and creating a piece of artwork that was inspired by nature. The children enjoyed searching the Discovery Park for a range of different leaves that we then painted and used to make a leaf print picture. We also carried out the 'Cola and Mentos' experiment and enjoyed some physical activities out on the Discovery Park at the end of the day.

Also on Friday this week it was our Sports Activity Day. The children enjoyed spending the day completing a range of different sporty activities. We started the day completing a daily mile around the yard, then we went swimming before lunchtime. After lunch we had a mindfulness and relaxation session with Carmela and played some games with the SAFC coaches. We had a fantastic day and were exhausted by the end of it, just as well we have a week off to recover!
