Little Steps, Big Aspirations For All

Spring 2

Stomp, crash, roar! Watch out – there are dinosaurs about! Yes, that’s right, we’re travelling back in time to the age of the
dinosaurs.
This half term, we’ll visit a museum, look closely at ancient fossils and study reptiles to understand how dinosaurs may
have lived and eventually died out. We’ll learn about the great fossil hunter, Mary Anning, and follow in her footsteps,
studying dinosaur teeth and bones to find out what dinosaurs liked to eat. Learning dinosaur names, creating puzzling
riddles, writing fantastic fact files and creating exciting dinosaur stories are some of the other activities we’ll be involved in
this half term. We’ll also use our artistic skills to make model dinosaurs and to design dinosaur landscapes.
At the end of our project, we’ll invite you to a dinosaur party to share our knowledge with you. We’ll invent some dinosaur
games to play and entertain you with our wonderful dinosaur music.

We made a lovely fruit salad after reading the story Oliver's fruit salad some of the children were very proud of themselves trying some of the fruit for the very first time.

In Literacy we had to ask Dino the Dinosaur question to find out all about him and where he lived, the children came up with some brilliant questions which we are going to put on our display boards just outside our classroom.

In maths we have been looking at positional language, we pretended we were space ships and zoomed across the planets going above and below.

In art we followed a step by step instructional video which taught us have to draw a dinosaur the children all did an amazing job and we super proud of themselves.

Our Yoimoji character this week has been bubbletum he is an resilient Yoimoji who never gives up, this is what we have been encouraging the children to do in school, never give up , keep on trying and do your best.

Any finally World book Day was a huge success, the children looked fantastic in their costumes and we read lots of stories together as well as doing word searches, designing book covers and looking at facts about World Book Day around the world. Interesting fact time..........World Book Day is celebrated in over 100 countries.

Week three

In literacy we took on the role of palaeontologist for the day and find out about a dinosaur of their choice. We usedse a range of simple non-fiction books that they are able to read independently and search the web to find out key facts

In Science we labeled the parts of a dinosaur’s body on a large scale diagram or picture, then we looked at images of dinosaur skeletons, identifying the main features and compared with the parts of a lizard’s body, discussing any differences.

In History we compared the lives during the age of the dinosaurs with modern life. Use pictures and key words to illustrate the main differences, then choose the most interesting differences to present to the rest of the class in a creative way.

Listen to and talk about dinosaur picture books or stories about dinosaurs. Discuss which books, characters and illustrations they most like and why. Read Dinosaurs love underpants

Make a dinosaur disguise for a floor robot and send him on a journey around a prehistoric landscape. Create a large map showing features such as volcanoes, waterfalls, rivers, forests and caves. Place a transparent grid over the top of the map and programme the robot to move from different points.

Listen to and discuss theories about the extinction of the dinosaurs. Find information in non-fiction books and on the web. Produce illustrations or diagrams to represent some of their ideas and choose one to explain to the rest of the class.

Look at and talk about fossils; observing, handling, drawing and making rubbings. Consider what they may have once been. Push small world dinosaurs’ feet, spines or heads into modelling clay, dough and Plasticine to leave an imprint. Leave to dry out then paint with silver or gold paint to make the impressions sparkle!

Play ‘Dinosaur chase’ with two children taking on the roles of dinosaurs (wearing green bibs), and two as palaeontologists (wearing bibs of a different colour). Run in a large space, freezing in a dinosaur pose if they are tagged by a dinosaur and being set free if tagged by a palaeontologist.
