Little Steps, Big Aspirations For All

Spring 1

Happy New Year to everyone and hope everyone has had a

lovely Christmas.

Week 1   7th January 2019

This week we have been talking about what we did over the Christmas holidays. We made a list of all our lovely Christmas presents we got.  We talked to our friends about our presents and then wrote a thank you letter to the elves in Lapland.

The children made number bonds to 5 using 6 children to demonstrate using problem solving skills to see how we need number bonds.

The children were introduced to our new topic ‘Street Detectives’. Karen gave us some hints and clues to see if we knew what the topic could be about.
We guessed it was about where we lived and using maps.

We talked about different types of houses that we live in in Class 5, some of us live in terrace houses, some live in semidetached and one of our friends live in a bungalow.

Week 2 14th January 2019

We have looked on Google maps and found the children’s houses. We also looked at a map of area around school, to find our school, Woodridge Gardens, the shops, the hairdressers.

We were told about and explained the purpose of an address and what each line shows using the school address to demonstrate and help us write it.

We played a new game called Compass after we learnt the different points of the compass. We remembered the rhyme ‘Never eat shredded wheat’ to help remember which direction to go into.

We listened to the story of Floppy and how he gets excited and talked about what made us

excited, how do we feel when excited, and who can make us feel excited.

Week 3 21st January 2019

The children visited the Metro centre this week locating the different chosen shops from the map of the Metro centre. Individual children took us on the route to the shop. Finding the lifts and escalators from the map to go on/in them.  After our walk around we enjoyed a visit to the Lego shop.

We enjoyed the story of 3 little pigs and ordering the events and answering questions to what happened in the story.

We did some addition and subtraction facts to 20, and some of us identify things that was more or less.

We made some pictures of different places around Washington using chalk and joined by road markings in the playground

Week 4   28th January 2019

We went to Washington Village and looked at the buildings such as the Old Forge and looked at pictures, to see if we could recognise them as they are today

We looked at the pictures of Washington Village old and new identified   buildings that they recognise in modern day.   We enjoyed being artists and painting some of the buildings of Washington Village.

Week 5 4th February 2019

This week it is Chinese New Year – we visited the Chinese Supermarkets in Chinatown and acted out the Chinese story of the animals in the race across the river.

We had lots of Chinese activities and made Chinese lanterns.

Week 6 11th February 2019

We heard the story of Percy the Park Keeper and visited Homer Hill farm at Durham to see the different meat and we had a drink in the café.

We enjoyed science experiments about the stormy weather and thinking about Percy felt in the storm.

Hope everyone has a nice holiday.
