 Summer 2

Our topic this half term is 'Oh I do like to be beside the Seaside!'

Week 1 - What do we see in Summer?

What a lovely start we have had to our last term together as Class 9! This week we started our new topic 'Oh I do like to be beside the Seaside' by looking at things linked to 'Summer'. The children began by talking about things that we think of when we say 'Summer' like sunshine, ice-cream and butterflies. We went on a summer walk firstly around school looking for signs of summer then later in the week we went on a summer walk to Washington Village and enjoyed a drink and snack in a local cafe. Also this week we enjoyed making a 'Summer Fruit Salad' tasting and exploring a range of different fruits. We also painted colourful butterflies that we have hung up in the classroom and talked about how to stay safe in the sun.

Have a look at what we have been up to below.

Also this week the children took on a challenge set by the school council. The children were tasked with selecting an area of school and working together to improve its appearance by tidying it up. The children selected the adventure playground which was full of stick and leaves and some playground equipment that had gone over the fence. The children did a fantastic job of tidying up the area and were really pleased with the final result!

Week 2 - Typical British Summer

This week we got to truly understand the meaning of 'Summer' in Britain as the rain came down and down and down. Our first trip out to the seaside had to be put on hold on Thursday as it wouldn't have been much fun! This week we have had lots of fun in the classroom however. We got to make some seaside collage pictures using sandy paint and then cutting and sticking seaside images on top such as beach balls and ice cream cones. Also this week we made seaside themed cupcakes, we topped our cakes with crushed biscuits to represent the sand and blue icing for the water. We also added fizzy rainbow belts to look like towels and put a jelly teddy bear on them as if they were sunbathing at the beach! Finally we had great fun making our very own instant(ish!) ice cream in the classroom! The children had to shake the ice cream mix inside a bag of ice and salt for quite a while which was pretty tiring but in the end we had delicious vanilla ice cream that we got to eat. Have a look at the fun we had below!

Week 3 - A perfect day for a picnic!

This week the children continued looking at our topic, focusing on the beach. On Tuesday we finally got to take a trip to the beach and we couldn't have picked a better day. We visited South Shields and had lots of fun walking along the beach, picking up shells and writing our names in the sand. We also looked around for different things, from lighthouses to lifeguards, and were able to spot almost all of the things from our topic board other than a wind break.

On Thursday it was National Picnic Day and again the weather was perfect. The children spent the day completing a perfect picnic activity where they designed their own idea of a perfect picnic. Then in the afternoon the children made themselves sandwiches which they then took out onto the Discovery Park along with some cakes and juice. We joined lots of different classes from around the school and had a fantastic time eating our picnics and playing with our friends.

Week 4 - Sports Day

This week we moved our topic onto 'Pirates'. Over the course of the week the children have listened to different pirate stories and completed pirate activities.

On Tuesday afternoon we held our 'Pirate Sports Day' alongside Class 6 and Class 11.  The weather started out fine but deteriorated very quickly with the final race finishing and everyone dashing for cover inside from the rain. The children seemed to really enjoy the afternoon completing the pirate races as did many of the parents.

It was lovely to see so many parents attend the event to support the children and the school. Overall the day

was a great success and we managed to raise £251 - Thank You!
